Your Maternity Photoshoot Guide

“Capture the beauty of this extraordinary chapter in your life!”

I. Welcome!

I am thrilled to be a part of your exciting journey and have put together the answers to most questions that come up about doing a maternity photoshoot.. Maternity photos are a wonderful way to celebrate this unique time in your life. The photos will be cherished memories for you and your family forever. I am dedicated to creating a comfortable and memorable experience for you.

II. Preparing for Your Maternity Photoshoot

A. Timing and Scheduling

The best time for a maternity photoshoot is typically between 30 and 36 weeks when your baby bump is beautifully round. Contact me early to secure your preferred date and time, as we often fill up sessions in advance, especially Saturday bookings.

B. Choosing the Right Location

Decide if you prefer the cozy atmosphere of an indoor studio or the natural beauty of outdoor settings like parks or beaches. Each location offers unique backdrops; choose the one that resonates with your vision. Below are a variety of spots I have photographed people in the Waikato/BOP.

C. Maternity Photoshoot Wardrobe Selection

For a maternity I photoshoot recommend flowing dresses, form-fitting gowns, and outfits that showcase your bump elegantly like robes. How much to wear or not wear is a personal choice that I completely respect, we will make great images no matter what you decide. Bring a couple of options for different looks. If your partner or siblings are also coming, coordinate the style to create a cohesive and visually appealing family portrait. You may want to have some nice photos with them, and then something more dramatic for yourself in a different outfit, Consider some comfy shoes or for more revealing outfits a robe for times when you are not being photographed.

I can lend you these if you don’t have anything.

D. Props and Accessories

Discuss any specific props or accessories you’d like to incorporate into your shoot, such as baby shoes, ultrasound images, or heirloom items.

E. Hair, Makeup, and Grooming Tips

Consider professional hair and makeup services for a polished look, and don’t forget to pamper yourself before the big day. There are some great options around Hamilton.

F. Getting Your Partner and Family Involved

Encourage your partner and children to be a part of this experience; it adds depth and warmth to your photos. Sometimes they will come for part of the shoot and then go do something else while you get individual photos, I am flexible.

III. Capturing the Perfect Shots

For solo photos, embrace different poses that highlight your bump, such as cradling your belly or looking over your shoulder. If your partner or family is coming to the maternity photoshoot and in the shots, create connections and capture genuine emotions by holding hands, sharing a laugh, or looking into each other’s eyes. It’s important to relax, take your time, and let your emotions shine through. Genuine smiles and affectionate moments make for the most memorable shots.

A. Outdoors

If you choose an outdoor location, I will work with the natural light and beauty of the surroundings to enhance your photos. We will pick the time for the best light for the place we select. Often that is in soft shade, out of direct sunlight, unless it’s for sunset.

B. Studio

Inside my little studio shooting space, I have various setups and backgrounds to create a unique atmosphere that suits your style. We can work with natural or studio lights.

IV. Making the Most of Your Maternity Photoshoot

A. Relaxation and Comfort

I understand that you may be nervous, so I will create a relaxed atmosphere to make you feel at ease. It will be a new adventurous experience, but you are in great hands and your pictures will look fantastic, just trust me.

B. Hydration and Snacks

Staying hydrated is crucial during your shoot and mood. Bring water and some light snacks to keep your energy up.

C. Multiple Outfit Changes

Feel free to change outfits to achieve a variety of looks and styles during your session. I have a small portable changing tent I can bring if it is helpful. Select clothes that flatter your form, and choose one outfit that is dramatic. I have long lengths of fabric I can bring if you like that look.

D. Be Open to Spontaneity

Some of the best shots happen when you least expect them, so don’t be afraid to embrace the moment. I will try to get some natural smiles or quiet thoughtful moments, just relax and let it out as it occurs. Candid moments are sometimes the purest emotions. Enjoy the experience
