Commercial photo or video FAQ

How does it work?

Normally you would get in contact and describe your project so I can give you an estimate. If we seem to be a good fit then we plan the project, shoot it, edit/revisions, and then launch the work.

What does commercial photo or video cost?

Some projects are half a day, and some are weeks. Most smaller photography projects are 1/2 day and I have given some pricing range indicators on the relevant pages. Video takes more effort and typically is 2-5 days, depending on complexity eg creating graphics, voiceover, or shooting montages from multiple sites. If my prices don’t seem high to you, its because I am in this for the long run and 9/10 of the jobs I get are repeat work. I price fairly and people trust me to get the job done, whatever it takes.

How is it different from portraits or weddings?

Commercial work is in its own separate category because my target audience is different. Portraits and weddings is about a person hiring me to solve a problem at the individual level eg commemorating something or capturing a relationship. The client for commercial work is a business. It’s more about brand and communication to their clients. The media might be supporting existing clients, or moving people from being interested to becoming clients. Rather than recording something, it’s purpose is often to motivate the viewer to take action.

Shouldn’t you be a specialist, why don’t you have a “niche”?

“Jack of all trades, master of none, though oftentimes better than master of one” is the full phrase. My specialty is solving business marketing/communication problems and having good taste. The photography or video we make needs to have a purpose and help the customers on their journey. Being a specialist, in say headshots, is limiting because you need a partner who understands business more than someone who only knows how to push the button on a camera and make a pretty picture. Hire a business person who knows how to take a photo, but more importantly why you are making them!
